Taib says he is ready to take the lead to realise objectives
SIBU: The Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) will help turn Sarawak into the richest state in the country by 2030.
Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud said the state was making preparations to achieve this through socio-political means.
Speaking at a Hari Raya gathering organised by the local branch of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) at a hotel here on Tuesday, he said SCORE would provide huge opportunities for the people.
And he himself is ready to take the lead to materialise SCORE objectives.
“But the people must be prepared to work hard and learn to tap the potential of SCORE,” he told the gathering of more than 500 people.
“By 2030, the population of the state is expected to increase to 4.5 million. Currently the population is two million. People will earn three times or more than what they have now,” he said.
To achieve SCORE’s objectives, Taib said that racial unity must be prioritised and preserved, and the leaders must be sincere, visionary and willing to make sacrifices.
“We must also get our manpower equipped with technological skills and knowledge,” he said.
He stressed that this was for the purpose of increasing their productivity.
He envisaged the need to create not less than four million jobs to correspond to the population growth.
Taib said 11 to 12 years ago, the state had no university, but now it has six.
They are Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, Universiti Teknologi Mara, Swinburne University, Curtin University, Laila Taib College and Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu campus.
On a related matter, he told PBB party members that they must actively play their roles to make SCORE a success.
To achieve this, the members must be united and disciplined, he said.
Moving on to politics, he lambasted the opposition for claiming to have answers to every problem.
“They talk and talk loudly as if they have Aladdin’s magical lamp.
“They even claim to be able to mitigate the flood here when they rule the state,” he said.
They had even instigated the people not to vote for the Barisan Nasional for its alleged failure in solving the problem.
“But they are only big liars!” he said Taib stressed the government had been doing all it can to solve the problem.
He said they had spent RM500 million on flood mitigation projects but due to restricted resources they had to be done gradually.
“I fear the problem will become worse if the people support the opposition in the coming state election,” he said.
The organising chairman of the gathering was Nangka assemblyman Datuk Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah.
Second Finance Minister and Minister of Environment and Public Health Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh, state’s Legislative Assembly Speaker Dato Sri Mohd Asfia Awang Nassar, Minister in the Chief Minister’s office Datin Fatimah Abdullah and Sibu Municipal Council chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King were among those attended.
